Tango was initially
danced in bars, cafes, gambling houses, and quilombos.
Later on, "Dancing Houses," that provided girls
for dancing and entertainment appeared. Decent
families and women of good reputation did not
want any part of this.
Groups of men would get together to
practice, improvise and innovate, creating new
moves and new steps this approach allowed a
rapid development of this dance.
Argentina developed fast between 1880 and
1930. The very rich had the habit of going to Europe
at least once a year. They had big homes in Paris
or London. The sons of those people remained
in Europe to study. It was they that introduced
Argentine Tango to the Parisian nobility. Tango
became the craze of the time.
Everybody started giving parties with Argentinean
orchestras, tango lessons and milongas. Women's
fashion had to change to adjust to the moves of
tango. The very bulky dresses were replaced by lighter,
looser ones. Tango became the dance of the moment;
from Paris, rapidly migrated to the other big capitals,
London, Rome, Berlin, and finally New York. Tango
returned to Buenos Aires dressed in a tuxedo.

The Argentine Tango
speaks to people. It may be the music, or the
movement of the dance itself…
the implied action within the still embrace,
the sensuous walking, the sweeping rhythm changes,
breathless pauses, knifelike legwork...there
can be a lifetime of fascination with the tango.

Social Tango
- Melbourne
Many people in
Australia associate tango with ballroom dancing
or Hollywood movies portraying couples dancing
with a rose between their teeth. In reality,
the tango as social dance works as a beautiful
way of connecting to another person through
the music, where communication and musicality
is honoured above all else. The basic movement
in tango is walking - simply walking around
the room to music with a partner.
